The “Surya Siddhanta,” another essential text from around 400-500 CE, addresses astronomical and mathematical aspects of astrology, explaining planetary positions, eclipses, and celestial phenomena.
Astrology in these ancient texts is closely tied to the concept of karma—how our actions shape our future—and the belief that celestial bodies play a significant role in shaping human destiny. The birth chart, or “Janma Kundali,” maps the positions of planets at the time of a person’s birth and is used to analyze key areas of life, including career, health, relationships, and spiritual development.
In Vedic astrology, nine planets, or Navagrahas, are considered influential: the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu. Each of these planets is associated with specific qualities and impacts different areas of life.
While traditional Indian astrology holds deep roots, modern astrology in India often blends Vedic principles with Western astrological ideas, offering a more comprehensive view of an individual’s destiny and life path.
Challenges for Astrology and Its Practitioners
While astrology has a rich tradition, predicting accurate outcomes is no easy feat. The quality of predictions relies heavily on the astrologer’s deep understanding of ancient principles, sharp observational skills, and ability to interpret complex celestial patterns. Sadly, this ancient practice faces challenges today.
There has been a noticeable decline in the number of skilled astrologers, with fewer people pursuing this demanding science as younger generations gravitate toward other careers. This shortage has led to a decline in the accuracy and reliability of astrological guidance.
Moreover, the translations of key astrological texts—whether from one language to another or through the interpretations of students—have sometimes caused distortions or omissions. In some cases, certain knowledge was deliberately withheld by experts to maintain their authority, further contributing to gaps in the tradition.
However, there is hope. Modern technology, particularly machine learning, presents a way to breathe new life into astrology. By analyzing vast amounts of astrological data, machine learning algorithms can identify patterns and generate insights that may be difficult for the human eye to spot.
